Even the school crest and motto is carved onto the façade of Hart House. These carvings are a beautiful addition aesthetically to the building. The Art Museum at the University of Toronto is one of the largest gallery spaces for visual art exhibitions and programming in Toronto. Charles Vincent Massey (BA 1910 UC) was chairing two student clubs and working for three U of T newspapers in 1910 when he saw an opportunity to forge links across faculty and college rivalries.

History

The Great Hall at Hart House is not only one of the oldest student centres in the world but its architecture is like something straight out of Harry Potter. This magical room is a feast for the eyes, featuring spectacular, soaring stained glass windows, an ornate wooden ceiling, gorgeous inscriptions, and now breathtaking Candlelight concerts. Designed by the Toronto architects Henry Sproatt and Ernest Rolph, and located on the University of Toronto's St George campus, this gift to the university from the Massey Foundation opened 11 Nov 1919.

This committee oversees concerts and events of various types of music, including rock, reggae, and folk. Throughout the school year the committee organizes six to ten concerts. The committee's aim is to bring the entire music community together from all campuses. These events are considered a "must see" for all first year students. There’s plenty to do at Hart House including events that appeal to those who love art, culture, and expanding intellectual horizons. You can visit exhibitions on music, from those focussing on the war in Ukraine to another that takes a deep dive into Toronto’s hip-hop history.

Jocelyne Larocque notched an assist as Toronto took a 4-0 lead after two periods. The Hart House at University of Toronto is a unique treasure situated in downtown Toronto, Hart House is full of elegant rooms and beautiful architectural details. Both the bridal suite and the groom suite (Bickersteth Room) were filled with oak-paneled bookshelves, stone fireplace, and leaded glass windows. You could feel the emotion in the room when the bride put on her ring designed by the groom, and when the groom opened the letter and gift from the bride. In the autumn of 1979 the music committee and CBC Toronto marked the 60th anniversary of Hart House with a series of four concerts featuring the Hidy-Ozolins-Tsutsumi Trio, Lois Marshall and Greta Kraus, Adrienne Shannon, and the Elmer Iseler Singers with the Toronto Brass. It was also the location in 1981 of the COMUS Music Theatre presentation of Graham George's opera A King for Corsica. Hart House's facilities include the Great Hall located in the East Wing which functions as an event venue, conference centre, and concert hall and houses a Steinway grand piano. The Music Room in the West Wing also boasts a grand piano, and is used for smaller concerts, lectures and events. The Theatre with its proscenium arch is located underground, and there is a large fitness/athletics complex. Besides other rooms for meetings and student use, Hart House houses an Art Gallery, and owns a farm located in Caledon used for retreats and recreation.

List of wardens

The ceilings in the corridors and many rooms such as the Upper Gallery of the Great Hall are vaults with ridge ribs, but of particular emphasis is the treatment of the library ceiling that uses decorative Lierne ribs, which can also be seen in the entrance vaults. The general shape of the frontispieces and what appear to be Tudor-like archways mirror the shape of the chimney arches, while the decorative cinquefoil shapes used for the windows can also be seen in the woodwork of doors and trusses. The main entrance on the south side, the entrance on the west side, and the entire east wall is treated with a Perpendicular style parapet of battlements. The Gothic nature of the structure is emphasized through the structural systems, layout, and ornamentation, while the weight of stone is de-emphasized through its decoration, and its contrast with the thin stained-glass windows.

Today, Hart House is a centre for experiential learning outside of class, but when it opened in 1919, it was a male-only space, a status-quo even endorsed by then Senator John F. Kennedy when he was invited to speak in 1957 (as reported in the Star at the time). Protests by faculty and students, along with shifting societal norms, forced change, and the ban on women fully ended only in 1972. Step into the Great Hall and you will immediately feel like you’re in a Harry Potter movie and at a Candlelight concert it has all of the enchantment of a Hogwarts ball. It has the same Collegiate Gothic style that feels very European, exactly like Christ Church College in the UK (actual set).

These include the writing groups le mot juste and the Algonquin Square Table, as well as the Hart House Review. The Literary and Library Committee regularly hosts a writer-in-residence who leads workshops and reviews students' writings. The committee also runs a library, located on the second floor of Hart House. It features a variety of books for in-house research and leisure reading, and often is the venue for public readings (also coordinated by the committee). In 1986, the University of Toronto Debating Union—a university-wide debating club dating back to the 1940s—approached the Hart House Debates Committee and came to an agreement that secured support for the Union from Hart House.

The organization, renamed the Hart House Debating Club, has ever since been the primary speech and debating society at the University of Toronto open to all students from all colleges and campuses. Close to the Romanesque-building style, Gothic, or Gothic-revival style uses stone masonry to build. The use of rocky dark sandstone and limestone materials contrasted greatly with the smooth brick lining inside, the pointed-arch shape dominating the windows and doors and hallways. The porch is another Gothic-revival element that architect Henry Sproatt added, a protected space in front of the main entrances for people to hide in case of bad weather. The addition of decorated wooden arch-braces and ceilings act like an acoustical amplifier for the Hart House Orchestra. Since 2008, the venue has hosted two of the largest annual Toronto chess events, the Hart House Holidays and Hart House Reading Week Open Chess Tournaments, regularly attracting over 200 players.

The grand interior of the House features high arched ceilings that vary from room to room. Uniquely designed fireplaces and well-tread wood floors add warmth to the House’s common rooms. As an integral part of the University of Toronto’s cultural landscape since 1919, Hart House is a peerless institution in its history of inspiring change, provoking thought and helping to shape artistic, cultural and social tapestry of the University and larger communities. This U of T landmark might not be the only Canadian establishment learning of a new naming conflict, as a Burnaby B.C. The name of a beloved Toronto building is buzzing on social media this week, all because of a famous, pint-sized American comedian and actor. Hopkins says he’s sick of apocalyptic and dystopian outlooks on life that often place Indigenous peoples in a negative light, so he began asking himself how he can make people feel good when looking at his art. Hopkins isn’t only moving Hart House into the 21st century with the messaging of his art, but with the use of technology as well, in the form of augmented reality. “If you point your phone at the mural, an eagle comes out of the star world and flies around the room.” Using Meta’s augmented reality (AR) technology, one can scan a QR code next to the mural, which will then open the Instagram app’s camera. The idea for the mural came to Hopkins while he attended that powwow at Fort York with his grandmother and sisters.

But before that official opening, during the First World War, the building was used as a training and rehabilitation facility for soldiers. Hart House celebrates its 100th birthday today, but the building has served as a focal point at the University of Toronto – and, indeed, the city – for more than a century. In 1995 a decision was made to restore and conserve these instruments, and on 20 May 1999 an unveiling ceremony took place at the Gallery Grill (antechamber to the Gallery Lounge).

The dinner will be broadcast live on C-SPAN as well as livestreamed on C-SPAN’s website and YouTube at 8 p.m.

Most notably around the middle finger of his right hand are three rings that cover it while his other fingers on his right hand don't have any rings and there are two metal rings around the ring and little finger of his left hand. The cufflinks and buttons on his white vest and waistcoat are skulls while a huge caduceus pin is on his left lapel along with a hat that is completely dark black and has a single red line around the centre of it, the line nearly down at the very bottom of the hat itself. During this season, Cameron starts getting romantically interested in House, but House appears disinterested. Matters are complicated when PPTH gets a new chairman, Edward Vogler, a billionaire holding the hospital a virtual hostage with a donation of $100 million. He takes a dislike to the "hardly working" House and after a series of clashes that result in Cameron resigning, seeks to have him fired.

House was born in 1959 , One possible birthday is June 11, 1959 (according to his hospital admission bracelet in No Reason) which is also actor Hugh Laurie's actual birth date. He is the child of Blythe House, a housewife who was married to Marine pilot John House. At the same time that John was overseas, Blythe was also having an affair with Thomas Bell whom House believed was his biological father due to the physical characteristics they share, but this turned out to be false. The second episode takes place during the present day and is directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr. This houseguest is a property developer and finds that the house has been infested.

Where to watch and stream all eight seasons of House:

House's condition is most likely made worse by the fact that prior to the infarction, he was quite an active athlete, engaging in golf and running on a regular basis. At the age of 12, realizing that his father had been away during his conception, House deduced that John was not his biological father. House confronted John with this information, and as a result they stopped speaking to one another for an entire summer, communicating only through hand-written notes.

The same should be the case with Dr. Gregory House, a character that's seemingly custom designed for a big ol' character arc. Unfortunately, he happens to star in the show that at some point decided to go all in with its "people don't change" premise. With enough "House M.D." under your belt, you pretty much know what you'll get. Patients always lie; It's (almost) never lupus; and House can never have a meaningful long-term arc that doesn't end with him reverting back to his core self, undoing any interesting developments. The show can (and does) slap him with work troubles, mental facilities and prisons, but the House that rides into the sunset with Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) is still the same lovably horrible misanthrope that treated Robin Tunney's Rebecca Adler in Season 1. Peacock also has all eight seasons available, giving viewers on that platform a chance to get a patient visit with Dr. House too.

Also to appear are Paul Kaye and Susan Wokoma, the latter of whom has Netflix credits such as "Crazyhead" and "Enola Holmes" (via Vox). With voice actors of this repute, it stands to reason that "The House" will be quite impressive. With the three-episode structure for the series, there are many roles voiced by notable actors. Chapter 1 alone has exciting prospects with Matthew Goode and Mia Goth as part of the Raymond family that first encounters the house.

He tries to extract an apology from House, who left Tritter in an examination room with a thermometer in his rectum. After House refuses to apologize, Tritter brings him up on charges of unprescribed narcotics possession and forces him to attend rehabilitation. When the case reaches court, Cuddy perjures herself for House and the case is dismissed. The judge reprimands Tritter for pursuing House to excess, and tells House that she thinks he "has better friends than he deserves", referring to Cuddy's 11th-hour testimony on his behalf.

Furthermore, he was once shown reading a French medical journal and an untranslated Japanese manga. For example, he used Yiddish, Russian and Latin phrases several times, but it is unknown how much of these languages he knows. The series' executive producers included Shore, Attanasio, Attanasio's business partner Katie Jacobs, and film director Bryan Singer. It was filmed largely in a neighborhood and business district in Los Angeles County's Westside called Century City. It received high critical acclaim, and was consistently one of the highest-rated series in the United States. House also frequently drinks liquor when he is not on medical duty, and classifies himself as a "big drinker". Toward the end of Season 5, House begins to hallucinate; after eliminating other possible diagnoses, Wilson and he determine that his Vicodin addiction is the most likely cause. House goes into denial about this for a brief time, but at the close of the season finale, he commits himself to Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital.

However, during House's eulogy in the series finale, Dominika claimed that he "was her husband for real" stating that she couldn't help but love him despite what he did. In 2012, after a year since House crashed his car into Cuddy's home, he serves his time behind bars at the East New Jersey Correctional Facility under the close watch of the prison warden. However, he seems to have been sentenced unnecessarily hard for a first offense.

“His sharp insights perfectly meet this remarkable time of divided politics, and a presidential campaign careening toward a rematch,” she added. “His smart brand of comedy and keen observation will turn up the heat on the national news media and across the political spectrum. House's willingness to take risks and experiment with his patients extends to his own health. Beyond his use of Vicodin, he has frequently used himself as a guinea pig for drugs and medical tests. Some of these tests are aimed at curing his leg pain, while others are to help his patients or satisfy his own curiosity. This disregard for his own well-being horrifies Wilson and Cuddy, who see it as an expression of his self-destructive impulses.

It's not a massive surprise, either, if you remember what a phenomenon the show was back in the day. In many ways, "House, M.D." is a perfect storm that combines medical drama with prestige-level storytelling and characters, and its cast is one for the ages. On paper, the series ticks all the boxes for an all-time great show, to the point that it even has a killer theme song with a story of its own. In its first season, House ranked twenty-fourth among all television series and was the ninth most popular primetime program among women. Aided by a lead-in from the widely popular American Idol, the following three seasons of the program each ranked in the top ten among all viewers. House reached its peak Nielsen ratings in its third season, attracting an average of 19.4 million viewers per episode.

They could easily revive the show today, and have House work in some other facility under an assumed name, with the exact same attitude and habits. Well, his arc was so conclusive that they had to take his show's goofiest character and create an entirely different gut-wrenching critical darling series to further explore the universe. Over time, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) wholly gives in to his darkest nature — initially because he feels that he has no other options, but ultimately because he enjoys it. Just like every other major character in his show, he evolves and actively reacts to the circumstances around him. As an undergraduate, Vincent Massey read history and English at University College in the University of Toronto, and then completed graduate studies in history at Balliol College, Oxford. Upon his return to Canada, he sought to bring a unifying, communitarian spirit to the highly independent colleges of the University of Toronto, inspired by the social and recreational life that he observed at Oxford's colleges. Massey, who in 1908 had become a trustee of his family estate, offered to establish a structure devoted to extracurricular activities at the university, an idea that was embraced by the university's governors.

While there was an early reluctance to include jazz in the music programs at Hart House, by the late 1950s regular jazz concerts had been initiated, and among the noted artists who subsequently appeared were Moe Koffman and Oscar Peterson. Sproatt’s showpiece, The Great Hall, occupies the east wing of the House. A gilded inscription of Milton’s Areopagitica, written in 1644 in defense of freedom of speech and thought, surrounds the 140-foot hall. The coats of arms of the Royal Family and degree-granting universities of the British Empire from 1919 sit below an enormous stained glass window on the south wall.

It meant that every piece of writing had to be approved by authorities before it could be printed, completely stifling freedom of speech. Eclectic and wide-ranging, many works are installed throughout offices and public spaces across campus to enhance the working and teaching environment of the University of Toronto. We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

On the south side of the building there is a line of miniature human head sculptures made out of stone near the top of the building. There are also stone lions and monkeys that are on the outside of the main doors one at each side. The arch braces on the flat roofs of the east hall ways have carved decorations on them.

It is also a late collegiate Gothic building because of its late erection date, 1919. The building consists of four wings around a quadrangle with a four-peaked tower extended from the south west corner. Although Hart House appears to be of masonry construction, it is actually structural steel and precast concrete with grey sandstone cladding. New York’s Brooke Hobson scored her first career goal — with assists from Micah Zandee-Hart and Jade Downie-Landry on a power play with 48 seconds remaining — to cap the scoring. Natalie Spooner followed with her league-leading 16th goal of the season — six more than the next closest player.

'The Fall of the House of Usher' Ending Explained Who Is Verna?

fall of the house of usher

The narrator also notes that Madeline's body has rosy cheeks, which sometimes happens after death. Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated. The Fall of the House of Usher is an American gothic horror drama television miniseries created by Mike Flanagan. All eight episodes were released on Netflix on October 12, 2023, each directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, with the latter also acting as cinematographer for the entire series. We heard this banging throughout the series, and much like Momma Usher when Roderick and Madeline were children, Madeline was not quite as dead as she initially seemed. She burst above ground, strangling Roderick as a surrounding storm began to take their childhood home down to the ground with them, just as Dupin got out of the house in time.

thought on “A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’”

But, still, a few lingering things remain that need to click in order for the series—based on the collected writings of Edgar Allen Poe—to really all fall into place. The song Roderick sings, “The Haunted Palace,” is an extended metaphor that compares the mind of a mad person to a haunted house or a palace under siege. In the first stanza of the song, Roderick names the monarch Thought (“In the monarch Thought’s dominion”), suggesting that reason rules over this mind. The physical elements of the palace additionally map onto the features of a human face. The “banners yellow, glorious, golden” that “float and flow” on the roof are locks of blond hair. It has two “luminous” windows representing eyes, and the door made of pearls and rubies is a mouth with red lips and pearly white teeth.

The Tell-Tale Heart

An ambitious and driven man, Roderick expects the most out of his six children, giving them access to every resource imaginable — except his fatherly affection. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character. “There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added.

The Fall of the House of Usher Cast & Characters in Mike Flanagan Series - Netflix Tudum

Occupying a former flour mill, Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles is a vibrant communal space that links art and architecture with a dynamic events program. In addition to supporting and collaborating with many local and international cultural organizations, nonprofits, and universities, the Los Angeles gallery fosters public dialogue with the arts through a range of activities that engage the city’s diverse population. London-based artist Catherine Goodman held a drawing session on the occasion of her exhibition, ‘New Works,’ in Downtown Los Angeles. ARTBOOK @ Hauser & Wirth Bookstore is a contemporary art and culture bookstore which highlights topical issues throughout the year by presenting a rotating thematic inventory of titles. ARTBOOK carries an extensive selection of magazines in a wide variety of subjects, as well as a large selection of children’s books, critical texts and performance titles.

Episodes

This death comes as a major twist; throughout the conversation between Roderick and Dupin, he notes that he's not answering texts he's receiving from his granddaughter. As you may remember, Madeline's plan was to turn Fortunato into a tech company, and one of her major projects was A.I. In a direct reference to Poe's most famous work (and how did we not see this coming with the name "LENORE"?!), A.I. Lenore only kept texting Roderick variations of, you guessed it, "Nevermore."

Storyline

This time, Flanagan’s ghoulish crew is entering familial territory, as ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting, diction, and imagery combine to create an overall atmosphere of gloom. The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies. Poe draws heavily on Gothic conventions, using omens and portents, heavy storms, hidden passageways, and shadows to set the reader on edge.

The Fall of the House of Usher review – a gleefully terrifying take on Edgar Allan Poe

Only, as evidenced by the noises coming from the basement, Madeline wasn't quite dead. In exchange for this protection, both Roderick and Madeline had to consent to the bargain that at the end of Roderick's life, just before he was fated to die anyway, his entire bloodline would die with him. Roderick and Madeline would also have to die at the same time, leaving this world the same way they came into it. The siblings agreed to the deal, left the bar, and soon after became convinced that the whole thing had been a shared delusion. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb.

Poe was often dismissed by contemporary literary critics because of the unusual content and brevity of his stories. When his work was critically evaluated, it was condemned for its tendencies toward Romanticism. The writers and critics of Poe’s day rejected many of that movement’s core tenets, including its emphasis on the emotions and the experience of the sublime. Accordingly, commentaries on social injustice, morality, and utilitarianism proliferated in the mid-19th century. Poe conceived of his writing as a response to the literary conventions of this period. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he deliberately subverts convention by rejecting the typical practices of preaching or moralizing and instead focusing on affect and unity of atmosphere.

Downtown Los Angeles

The bookstore also features a comprehensive collection of Hauser & Wirth artists’ titles and exhibition catalogues. Situated at the center of Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles, Manuela unites chef, farmer and artist to create an authentic and original dining experience. Under the direction of Executive Chef Kris Tominaga, the menu celebrates seasonal ingredients sourced from the best farms and producers in Southern California. For groups of 10 or more people, Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles offers guided tours Tuesday through Thursday of the exhibitions currently on view. To request a guided tour, please email us at with your preferred date and time. The final episode finally reveals what Roderick and Madeline did—and were running from—all those years ago, and how they first got involved with Verna in the first place.

As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake. It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks. It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles Learning programs aim to instigate a dialogue between the works on view and our diverse audiences – artists, downtown residents, community partners, students, and faculty of Southern California schools and academic institutions. The garden, a certified Wildlife Habitat as recognized by the National Wildlife Federation, is an oasis within the burgeoning Downtown Los Angeles Arts District.

Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault. In the days that follow, the narrator starts to feel more uneasy in the house, and attributes his nervousness to the gloomy furniture in the room where he sleeps. The narrator begins to suspect that Roderick is harbouring some dark secret. The eldest of the Usher “bastards,” Victorine has made helping people her life’s work, but like her siblings, the true source of her ambition is her desire for her father’s approval and affection.

Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. When Poe began writing short stories, the short story was not generally regarded as serious literature.

As a parent himself, Roderick doesn’t fare much better, having six children by five different women who range from obnoxious hedonists (Napoleon and Prospero Usher) to despicable creeps (Frederick, Tamerlane and Victoria) to obnoxious, despicable hedonist creeps (Camille). The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror. Alongside his favoured players is Mark Hamill as an unfeeling lawyer/fixer for the Usher family who sounds as if he gargles a pint of nails every morning. But as we know from the start, there’s no point in getting overly attached to them, as grisly fates are assured for all. It’s not so much the “what” as the “why” that the audience and Dupin need to be answered. It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror.

Featuring a chicken coop and beds of herbs and vegetables, which support the onsite restaurant, Manuela – this space aims to integrate community with urban food production and sustainability. The serene and contemplative environment is surrounded by an abundance of street art murals, which have been kept in their original locations, creating a juxtaposition of the site’s local history with its new life. The open-air courtyard and garden won the 2019 Landscape Architecture category of the 49th Los Angeles Architectural Awards. While under testimony, he went against what he said he would do, saying instead that Dupin was harassing him, that Fortunato did no wrong, and this his signatures were never forged. She's first present tending bar when Roderick and Madeline stop in on New Year's Eve 1979, and we don't know what's going on with them, but we know they're nervous about something. Throughout the rest of the series, Verna continues to show up—more than 40 years later, always looking exactly the same as the day she met them.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house.

Bruce Greenwood

Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home.

While eventually Roderick could have used this to simply move his way up, he and Madeline had other plans. The twin siblings showed up to Fortunato's New Year's Eve 1979 party, greeted by a grateful Griswold, dressed as a court jester. After much schmoozing, Griswold eventually started hitting on Madeline, before the two retreated down to a soundproof basement. Here, Griswold realized that Madeline wasn't just seducing him—she was drugging him too. He passed out, waking up tied to a chair in a secret tiny room behind a brick wall being built. Even before the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, it's abundantly clear that Verna (Carla Gugino) is no mere human being.

More Must-Reads From TIME

The plot of the romance (a fictional title invented by Poe himself, called ‘Mad Trist’) concerns a hero named Ethelred who enters the house of a hermit and slays a dragon. Roderick Usher is a gifted poet and artist, whose talents the narrator praises before sharing a poem Usher wrote, titled ‘The Haunted Palace’. The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was.

The narrator and Roderick place her in a tomb despite her flushed, lively appearance. In the tale's conclusion, Madeline escapes from the tomb and returns to Roderick, scaring him to death. Like Madeline, Roderick is connected to the mansion, the titular House of Usher.

But Verna (which, if you notice, is an anagram of RAVEN) represents some kind of devil or adjacent otherworldly force, a harbinger of death who exists only to tempt and test the ethics and morality of those who need testing. Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled. It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly.

For example, the narrator realizes late in the game that Roderick and Madeline are twins, and this realization occurs as the two men prepare to entomb Madeline. The cramped and confined setting of the burial tomb metaphorically spreads to the features of the characters. Madeline is buried before she has actually died because her similarity to Roderick is like a coffin that holds her identity. Madeline also suffers from problems typical for women in -nineteenth--century literature.

An interesting aspect to Verna is that she is physically appearing in these places; Roderick, Madeline, and lawyer/fixer Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) find her in photos that aren't only in the present, but date back to past centuries, always looking exactly the same. Roderick refuses to believe it, but Madeline knows that this is their past coming back for them. Sliding through it all is the mysterious man who works as a sort of fixer for the Ushers, Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill), totally reimagined from the title character in Poe’s only complete novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Dreams, for instance, are the way our unconscious mind communicates with our conscious mind, but in such a way which shrouds or veils their message in ambiguous symbolism and messages. The mother of Frederick and Tamerlane, Annabel Lee was Roderick’s only real love.

Limited Series – The Fall of the House of Usher

The story features numerous allusions to other works of literature, including the poems “The Haunted Palace” and “Mad Trist” by Sir Launcelot Canning. Poe composed them himself and then fictitiously attributed them to other sources. Both poems parallel and thus predict the plot line of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “Mad Trist,” which is about the forceful entrance of Ethelred into the dwelling of a hermit, mirrors the simultaneous escape of Madeline from her tomb.

The story is narrated by a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the Usher mansion. This friend is riding to the house, having been summoned by Roderick Usher, having complained in his letter that he is suffering from some illness and expressing a hope that seeing his old friend will lift his spirits. A former model and actor, Morrie left that life behind her for a loving marriage and motherhood.

Her warmth and trusting nature always helped her to find the best in Roderick… and her trust in her husband might have left her blind to the dangers encroaching her family. A dedicated, kind, and thoughtful husband to Tamerlane, Bill (or BillT as his fitness followers call him) is more than happy to team up with his wife on their newest wellness venture. With only love for Tammy, Bill is always willing to do what will make her happy, even if it goes against his own desires. Roderick’s second wife, Juno, is a former junkie whose recent marriage to Roderick has left his family bewildered.
